I am looking forward to being president of Uckfield & District Lions & being able to inform people about our vibrant & busy club. During my year as Vice, I spent time looking at most areas of our club’s activities & concluded that we are one of the busiest in our zone.
Each year we support the ‘Roar’ programme for local schools to submit entries for ideas from children to improve the environment or society. Then come the Christmas sleigh visits to our streets & local children. In the Spring, there is prostate & diabetes testing, & the Easter Egg raffle. In April we organise the catering at the Bluebell Walk in Arlington raising funds specifically for KSS Air Ambulance. In June, we organise a ‘Family Fun Day’ for the local community.
Through-out the year our second-hand bookshop in Olives Yard is one of the best illustrations of lions’ members & volunteers working together to raise funds for local charities. We also run a minibus all year round, offering transport to many organisations at reasonable cost.
This next year, our club along with others in the zone, have a very exciting new opportunity. Several of our members have been training to use a camera that detects eye problems in young children. Lions have always had a big interest & involvement in eye care, & this new initiative will help to spot conditions that may require further investigation.
I would like to thank the last president, Graham Baldwin, for his service & commitment.
