On the week-end of 25th & 26th April, Uckfield lions will be leading the other lions clubs of 105SE District in organising the ‘Blue-Bell Walk’ at Beatons wood, Arlington.
The 24 acre wood is part of the ancient wood-land, which once belonged to Michelham Priory. It teems with white wood anemones & blue-bells each Spring.
The McCuchan family, owners of the wood since 1922, open the wood to the public & share the proceeds with different charities.
The lions meet & greet visitors, man the entrance, organise the mobility tricycles provided for the disabled & most important of all – provide the catering.
This is a major operation presided over by our president Graham Baldwin, a former professional chef! It also involves much making of cakes by lions & their wives.
Last year we welcomed 4,000 visitors & raised £7,600 in profits from the catering.
As last year, our proceeds will go towards our target of raising £120,000 to modify one of the KSS Air Ambulance helicopters to carry ‘PinS’ – a navigation system, which will allow flying in poor visibility, where the pilot cannot see the ground. This should enable the helicopter to reach an extra 150 patients per year.
